In the Future, Everyone Will Be World Famous For 15-Minutes
Remember super skinny jeans or fanny packs (not the 90's version, the 2018 resurgence)?
Trends come and go faster than the punch line of a "that's what she said" joke (remember that trend)?
It's one thing to be current - it’s an entirely different thing to have no identity at all.
Trends, by definition, are fleeting, short-term. If you live short-term to short-term you’ll never establish a long-term identity people can grasp onto.
They’re also oversaturated - which makes them a trend, by definition. Everyone and their dog have participated, which makes you just another blip on the map.
Sorry for the rant...
I'm not anti-trend. I'm just pro self/brand awareness.
So, to get the most out of a trend, try this:
Understand who you are & what you want to be known for
Analyze the trend: Why is it a trend? what interests people about it?
Look at the crowd: Are the trend followers your people?
Does the trend make sense with your brand? (back on step 1)
The people who understand the trends at a deep level are the ones who crush them - and get the most ACTUAL mileage because their attention is aligned with their brand.
So, don't be a trend chaser. Upend the trends and turn them into long term strategies
